Edna M. Hart Keeper of the Dream Scholarship
An advocate of education and a charter member of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Commission of Florida, Edna M. Hart was a teacher and reading specialist in several schools of Alachua County, Florida for over forty years.
In 1949, she was the first woman of color to be awarded a Masters degree in Alachua County.
She has impressed, inspired and impacted the lives of scores of students over four decades. She was a woman of simple goals. She wanted to be a helper believing that “If I can help somebody along the way then my living would not be in vain”.

Joseph “Joel” Buchanan
Drum Major for Justice Scholarship Award
Named in honor of educator and historian Joseph “Joel” Buchanan, this scholarship recognizes high school seniors who have overcome adversity and excelled academically. In 1964, Buchanan became the first Black male student to integrate Gainesville High School, graduating with honors just two years later. He went on to earn two degrees from the University of Florida and spent his career as a teacher, librarian, and leading voice in preserving African American history in Alachua County. This award celebrates students who embody his resilience, courage, and commitment to justice.
